Out my window, a bluebird dive-bombs a squirrel,
Swooping upon its head to drive it away.
Never mind that the squirrel has no designs
Upon the bluebird chicks safe within their nest.
Or that he who placed the bird house high upon its post
Equipped it with a baffle to keep predators at bay.
Coon nor cat nor snake nor least of all a lowly squirrel
Has ever ascended that post, eggs nor bluebird chicks to steal.
But bluebird papas ever will defend their territory
From dangers great or small, real or imagined.
For bluebirds hold fast to their second amendment rights
And will defend with talon and beak their castled nests,
Mindless of the surer defense bestowed by the one
Who provided them the nest box in the first place.
