Watch the Birds

Watch the birds and you will see
That half of flying is falling
Their wings dance with air
As gravity pulls them down.
Penguins too fall and fly
But through water rather than air
Descending for their meal of fish,
Which, now that I think of it,
Also fall and swim.
Avian, aquatic, and terrestrial—
All creatures under heaven’s dome
Acquit themselves of gravity’s force
And know within their bones
That without it, we’d all be aliens.
Eve, Babel, and Icarus would
Teach us to carefully shun
Knowledge and power that
That reaches beyond our wisdom.
